WELCOME TO WEEK 40

What Can You Do While You Wait?

This week, Ema shares five gentle, natural ways that may help encourage labour.

Why Labour Starts When It’s Ready And What You Can Support in the Meantime

At this stage, you might feel emotionally and physically stretched. It’s normal to wonder if there’s something you can do to “kickstart” labour. While there’s no way to force it, there are safe, evidence-informed practices that may help create the right conditions, from baby’s position to hormonal readiness.

This week is about supporting your body, not rushing it.

Walking and gentle movement help your baby settle deeper into your pelvis. Hip circles on a birth ball can also support optimal positioning and pelvic mobility.

Try this:

  • Take slow walks outside or around the house
  • Do gentle figure-8s or hip rolls on a birth ball
  • Keep movement relaxed and rhythmic

Some foods like eggplant parmigiana have become folklore favourites. While the evidence is anecdotal, the act of nourishing yourself with a comforting, grounding meal can be emotionally supportive and that matters too.

Acupuncture has been used for centuries to support labour preparation. Certain points may encourage the release of prostaglandins and oxytocin; two key hormones that help soften the cervix and stimulate contractions.

Note:
Always seek a qualified, pregnancy-trained acupuncturist.

Oxytocin is your body’s natural “labour hormone” and it flows when you feel safe, relaxed, and connected.

You can encourage it through:

  • Loving touch and cuddles
  • Nipple stimulation
  • Intimacy and orgasm
  • A warm bath or relaxing movie
  • Laughter or lighthearted connection

Sometimes the best thing you can do is stop trying to force anything. Rest, nest, slow down. Let your body feel supported so your baby knows it’s safe to begin.

Reminder:
Your body knows what it’s doing, even if it feels quiet right now.
