Bowel Movements Getting Less Regular?

This week, Ema shares six natural, low-effort ways to help get things moving again, gently and safely.

Late-pregnancy constipation is incredibly normal. Hormonal changes and your baby’s growing size can slow things down but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck.

Here’s some natural ways to get things moving again:

Warm water first thing in the morning helps “wake up” your digestive system and lemon adds a natural kick-start. It’s a simple ritual that can make a big difference.

Try this:
Squeeze half a lemon into a cup of warm water and sip before breakfast. Add a pinch of Celtic or Himalayan salt for extra hydration support.

Dehydration makes everything slower and harder. Staying well-hydrated softens stool and supports more regular digestion.

Try this:
Carry a water bottle with you and sip often. A pinch of celtic sea salt in your water can also help your body absorb fluids more effectively.

Regular physical activity, even in small doses, can activate your digestive system and ease that heavy, backed-up feeling.

What helps:

  • Short walks
  • Prenatal yoga
  • Gentle Pilates or stretching

Foods rich in natural fiber help bulk and soften your stool but it works best when increased gradually and alongside hydration.

Supportive foods include:

  • Whole grains
  • Prunes
  • Chia or flaxseed
  • Leafy greens and seasonal veg

Magnesium helps your muscles, including those in your digestive tract, to contract and relax effectively.

Options include:

  • Leafy greens
  • Nuts and seeds
  • A pregnancy-safe magnesium powder or topical spray (check with your healthcare provider)

A healthy gut needs healthy bacteria. Fermented foods support digestion and overall bowel health.

Try adding:

  • Yogurt or kefir
  • Sauerkraut
  • Miso or kimchi (in moderation)
