Why Leg Cramps Hit Hardest in the Third Trimester

This week, Ema shares five daily habits that may help reduce cramping and support circulation.

Why They Happen in the First Place

As your pregnancy progresses, circulation becomes slower, your body holds more fluid, and your muscles are carrying extra load, especially through the legs. Add mineral depletion (like magnesium or potassium), and cramps are more likely to show up.

Here’s how to stay ahead of them:

A gentle calf stretch before you sleep, and again if a cramp strikes, helps prevent that sudden tightening.

Try this:
Lean into a wall with one heel pressed back. Hold the stretch for 20–30 seconds on each side. Breathe slowly. Repeat if needed.

Hydration isn’t just about water, it’s about electrolytes too. Adding a pinch of Celtic or Himalayan sea salt can help your body absorb fluid more effectively and stay balanced.

Tip:
Sip small amounts through the day and listen to your thirst. Don’t wait until you’re already cramping.

Magnesium plays a key role in muscle relaxation. Adding more of it to your diet can help reduce both frequency and intensity of cramps.

Ema’s favourites:

  • Leafy greens
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Bananas
  • Dark chocolate

A warm Epsom salt bath is a simple, soothing way to increase magnesium and ease tight muscles.

Try this:

Soak for 15–20 minutes in the evening. Breathe slowly. Let your legs soften.

Raising your legs helps take pressure off your veins and improves circulation which can reduce that heavy, achy feeling by day and prevent cramps by night.

Try this: Prop your legs on a pillow, ottoman, or box while sitting or lying down. Do it regularly, not just when you’re already sore.
