WELCOME TO WEEK 31
A Quick Guide to Raspberry Leaf
This week, Ema unpacks what the research says, how it works, and why it’s trusted as a gentle, time-tested support in the final weeks of pregnancy.
How It’s Thought to Help
Raspberry leaf tea isn’t about triggering labour. It’s about toning the uterine muscles, so they contract more effectively when labour does begin. It’s often used to support:
- A shorter second stage of labour
- More efficient contractions
- Reduced chance of intervention (like forceps)
A 2001 randomised controlled trial published in the Australian College of Midwives journal found that women who took raspberry leaf tablets from 32 weeks had:
- A significantly shorter second stage of labour
- A reduced rate of forceps deliveries
While research is still limited, these findings align with long-standing traditional use and many midwives still recommend it today.
While sipping herbal tea might sound lovely, late pregnancy can make it a bit inconvenient, especially with a squished bladder.
Ema’s advice:
Raspberry leaf tablets are a practical alternative. They’re easier to dose, and they’re what was used in the clinical study. Look for a quality supplement and always follow dosage guidance on the label.
Most guidance suggests waiting until around 32 weeks before introducing raspberry leaf. Always check in with your care provider, especially if you have a history of early labour, uterine surgery, or a high-risk pregnancy.
Start slowly:
- Begin with 1 cup of tea or 1 tablet per day
- Gradually increase over a couple of weeks, if well tolerated

*The information in this video is general in nature and is not intended to replace personalised medical advice. Raspberry leaf is traditionally used in the third trimester, but it may not be suitable for everyone. Please speak with your midwife, GP, or obstetrician before using any herbal products during pregnancy, especially if you have a high-risk pregnancy, are taking medication, or have experienced preterm labour.
