Noticing Swollen or Visible Veins? Here’s What Helps
This week, Ema shares five gentle ways to ease discomfort and support circulation, without adding pressure.
Why They Happen (and Why You’re Not Doing Anything Wrong)
During pregnancy, your growing uterus puts pressure on major blood vessels, especially the vena cava, which returns blood from your lower body. Combine that with hormonal softening of vessel walls, and blood can pool in your legs more easily.
It’s common. It’s manageable. And there are ways to feel better today.
Elevating your legs above heart level helps blood flow back toward the heart and reduces pressure in the lower limbs.
Try this:
Lie on your side with your legs supported on cushions or propped against a wall. Just 10–15 minutes a day can help.
Circulation thrives on gentle movement. Short walks, even around the house, help pump blood back up through the veins and reduce pooling.
What helps:
Break up long periods of sitting or standing. Stretch your calves. Shift your weight regularly when on your feet.
Crossing your legs restricts circulation and increases pressure in the veins, especially if you’re sitting for long stretches.
Instead:
Sit with both feet flat on the floor or prop one foot slightly forward. Small change, big difference.
Tight calves and hips can restrict blood flow. Gentle stretching helps relieve tension and supports smoother circulation.
Try this:
- Seated ankle rolls
- Standing calf stretch
- Side-lying hip opener
Mild compression stockings or socks support your veins and help prevent blood from pooling in the legs. Especially helpful if you’re on your feet often or prone to swelling.
Look for:
Pregnancy-safe options with light to moderate compression. Put them on first thing in the morning before swelling starts.
