WELCOME TO WEEK 19

What That Sharp Belly Pain Really Means

This week, Ema explains what’s happening and shares gentle, natural ways to ease the discomfort.

What Exactly Is Round Ligament Pain?

Your uterus is growing quickly now, and it’s supported by strong, flexible bands of tissue called round ligaments. As these ligaments stretch, you might feel sharp or crampy pain on one or both sides of your lower abdomen, often during sudden movement.

It can be uncomfortable, but it’s usually nothing to worry about.

Quick movements, like getting out of bed or standing too fast, can trigger sharp pulls in the ligaments. Slowing down your transitions can make a big difference.

Try this:
Roll onto your side before sitting up. Plant your feet, then rise slowly. Support your belly with a hand or pillow if needed.

Support belts can reduce the weight pulling on your ligaments, especially during walks or while standing for long periods. They help hold your belly more evenly and reduce strain on your lower body.

Tip:
Choose a soft, adjustable band that’s designed for prenatal wear. Comfort is key.

Gentle stretching helps release tension and gives your ligaments more room to adjust. Even just a few minutes a day can help.

Ema recommends:

  • Pelvic tilts
  • Cat-cow stretches
  • Supported side-lying stretches with pillows

Always move within your comfort zone and breathe deeply.

A warm (not hot) pack or towel over your lower abdomen can soothe tense muscles and make things feel less sharp. Heat helps relax the area and encourages circulation.

Try this:
Apply a warm compress for 10–15 minutes while lying on your side or reclining. Add breathwork if it helps you unwind.

Round ligament pain is usually short-lived and harmless but if the pain is sharp, constant, or accompanied by bleeding, fever, or nausea, always check in.

You know your body best. Trust it.
